Gold Coast, QLD, March 25, 2022 - A $157 million bid led by Gold Coast, Queensland-based Gilmour Space Technologies to grow sovereign space manufacturing in Australia has been awarded the largest Federal Modern Manufacturing Initiative - Collaboration (MMIC) grant for Space.
Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction Angus Taylor MP said in a statement that the Government’s $52 million co-investment in the project will help unlock further collaboration between small and medium businesses and researchers to see launch vehicles and satellites take off to space.
“From testing to manufacture, to assembly and finally launch, this project will harness great Aussie know-how to attract further private investment and create hundreds of high-skilled and high-value jobs. This is a big win for Queensland jobs.”
Said Adam Gilmour, CEO of Gilmour Space, which led the proposal with over 30 leading space manufacturers, universities, and supply chain companies across six states and territories in Australia: “This is a big deal for our Australian Space Manufacturing Network (ASMN) partners, and for commercial space in Australia."
“Rockets and satellites are key enablers of the global space economy. This co-funding will provide timely support for emerging space manufacturers to develop and mature significant space capabilities in Australia," he added. The ASMN proposal, which includes support from the Queensland Government, aims to establish three new space facilities in Queensland: 1. A common test and manufacturing facility, enabling members to advance their space research and technology development at lower cost. 2. An advanced manufacturing facility for building commercial rockets and satellites, anchored by Gilmour Space. 3. An orbital spaceport at Abbot Point in North Queensland, that will help bring many of these products to space.
“Details have yet to be provided, but we and our ASMN partners intend to leverage on the MMIC grant to engage in the full spectrum of space activities, from research and development to advanced manufacturing and launch. These efforts will help grow the industry and deliver real civil, commercial and defence benefits for the nation,” he said.
